Year of the Rooster

Suggested Age: 7+
Pieces: 161
Casual Build Time: 20 minutes
Brand: LEGO Creator

This was the last of the special sets that I managed to snag during my January trip to London. This one was released over a very limited time to celebrate Chinese New Year, and was only available in the UK to people who spent over a certain amount in the Leicester Square store. It’s now pretty hard to find, but there are some copies available on eBay if you desperately want one to add to your collection.

The set contains all of the pieces required to make the rooster and comes in a nice little presentation box. Included in the set is also a cardboard envelope, designed so that you can also give a gift of money along with the kit as per New Years tradition.

Here’s a better look at what came in the box:

Mighty Dinosaurs

Suggested Age: 7-12
Pieces: 174
Casual Build Time: Triceratops & Pterodactyl – 20 minutes / T-Rex – 30 minutes
Dimensions: Triceratops – over 3″ / Pterodactyl – over 1″ x 7″ x 9″ / T-Rex – over 4″

LEGO does a number of different “3-in-1” sets, but this is the first one that’s appealed to me due to my love of dinosaurs. Over the last few months, I’ve gotten my dinosaur fix from a couple of knock-off LEGO kits – Blox and LELE Bricks – and so I jumped at the chance to get hold of an official LEGO version to see just how much better they were.

As the box states, this set contains the instructions and necessary pieces to make the three pictured dinosaurs. It should be noted, however, that this is a rebuild set. This means that you can only create one of these models at a time and need to dismantle and rebuild if you want to try one of the others.

Here are some better pictures of the finished products:

This Narwhal is another promotional set that I managed to snag on my London adventure earlier this year. The set was initially only made available in LEGO Stores as a promotional “monthly build” in January of this year. Surplus ones were then sold off online, but it’s now one that’s not so easy to find as the promotion is long past.

This is going to be a pretty short review, as there isn’t a lot to this set at all. Like some of the other small kits that I’ve posted about previously, the set is just a small polybag kit that only contains the parts needed to construct the narwhal.

London Bus

Suggested Age: 7+
Pieces: 118
Casual Build Time: 15 minutes
Dimensions: over 2″ x 4″ x 1″
Brand: LEGO Creator

This review is likely to be pretty short, but it features another special set. The London Bus is a UK exclusive kit that was originally released as a promotion alongside the hugely impressive LEGO Big Ben. Now, it’s available to purchase only in the UK stores. I was lucky enough to snag mine when I checked out London’s new Leicester Square store back in January.

There isn’t an awful lot to really talk about with this kit, as all it includes are the pieces required to make the bus. There are no minifigures included, and the finer details are all provided by use of stickers.

Here’s a closer look at what came in the box:

Palace Cinema

Suggested Age: 16+
Pieces: 2,194
Casual Build Time: 9.5 hours
Dimensions: Palace Cinema: 15″ x 10″ x 10″ / Limousine: 1.6″ x 5.9″ x 1.9″
Brand: LEGO Creator

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get around to posting this review – life is hectic! Anyhow, the Palace Cinema kit was a bit of a special kit for me and is certainly way more elaborate than the ones that I usually buy for myself. Although I prefer building vehicles, I’ve admired this set for a long time and was very pleased to receive one for my 30th birthday!

The set is inspired by Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and forms part of LEGO’s Modular Buildings series. It comes with all the pieces required to build the cinema and limousine, as well as a number of accessories and six minifigures – a child actress, a chauffeur, a female guest, a male guest, a photographer, and a cinema worker.

This is going to be a very photo-heavy review, so read on if you’d like to take a closer look inside this beautiful set!

Just a quick review as I got one of these polybags free with a larger purchase at the LEGO store. It’s only a tiny kit though so this is going to be very brief! The kit builds one small parrot with ball-jointed wings and an adjustable tail. You can grab one from any LEGO Brand Shop in the EU, Australia and New Zealand (including online) so long as you spend £25.
