Jungle Halftrack Mission

Suggested Age: 6-12
Pieces: 378
Casual Build Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes
Dimensions: Halftrack Truck – over 3″ x 5″ x 2″ / ATV – over 1″ x 3″ x 1″ / Temple – over 3″ x 2″ x 2″ / Panther – over 3″
Brand: LEGO City

I hadn’t made a LEGO City set for a while so I thought I’d have a shot at one of the newer sets in this range. I must admit, I was attracted to this one by the panther as I am the owner of a very lovely black cat. However, this set has a lot more to offer than just one really cool pussy cat.

The set contains all of the pieces needed to make a halftrack truck, ATV and temple. On top of this, it comes with two minifigures, a panther and a spider. The accessories for the minifigures to play with include a ruby, a chicken drumstick, a pan, a walkie talkie and a machete.

Stunt Truck

Suggested Age: 7-14
Pieces: 142
Casual Build Time: 45 minutes
Dimensions: Stunt Truck – over 3″ x 7″ x 3″ / Ramp – over 4″ x 3″ x under 1″
Brand: Technic

This kit was a bit of an impulse buy, as my local Toys R Us was having a sale on a bunch of LEGO sets that had been water damaged. Because of these, I apologise for how shoddy the box picks look. Luckily for me, none of the stickers or pieces had been damaged and so I got to pick up my first ever Technic kit for a nicely discounted price.

This set contained all the necessary pieces to make a Stunt Truck, as well as the a small ramp for it to jump over. It should be noted that this kit is designed to be combined with a separate kit – the Stunt Bike – in order to make a larger vehicle called the Power Racer. However, as the bike wasn’t in the Toys R Us sale, I’ll be looking at this kit for its own merits.

The Milano vs. The Abilisk

Suggested Age: 7-14
Pieces: 460
Casual Build Time: 2 hours
Dimensions: Milano – over 3″ x 7″ x 14″ / Abilisk – over 2″ x 3″ x 7″
Brand: Marvel Super Heroes

This is another one of those sets that I’ve been eyeing up for months – pretty much ever since I saw the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie. In case you haven’t seen the film, the kit is designed around an early scene in which the Guardians battle a tentacled alien beastie.

The kit includes all the pieces that you need to make Peter Quill’s customised Ravager vessel and the voracious Abilisk. It also includes four minifigures – Star Lord, Gamora, Drax and Nebula – and a selection of accessories including weapons, handcuffs, jet packs, Annulax batteries, a speaker and Baby Groot.

It’s been a long while since I last took a look at the Speed Champions kits and I’ve had my eye on this one for a while. It’s one of the larger sets in the range and has a really neat selection of vehicles and objects – how could I resist?

The set contains all the pieces you need to make the two vehicles, as well as a trailer, engine crane and trolley, starting light, team garage and victory podium. It also comes with four minifigures – two drivers, a mechanic and a race official – and a whole bunch of different tools for them to use.

Moana’s Ocean Voyage

Suggested Age: 6-12
Pieces: 307
Casual Build Time: 1 hour
Dimensions: Boat – over 6″ x 5″ x 5″ / Island – over 4″ x 6″ x 1″
Brand: Disney

Before I begin, be warned that this kit (and review) actually contains spoilers for the end of the film. Please don’t read on if you haven’t already seen it.

Moana is a fantastic Disney film and so I was really keen to get my hands on one of LEGO’s two tie in kits. I decided to go for the slightly more expensive one as it included the boat and Maui, both of which are missing from the cheaper Island Adventure kit.

The Moana’s Ocean Voyage kit contains the pieces necessary to build a boat, the island of Te Fiti and a small raft. It comes with an interesting selection of figures – Moana, Maui, Heihei the chicken and two Kakamora – and its accessories include an oar, a banana, a pineapple, the Heart of Te Fiti and Maui’s fish hook.

The Scuttler

Suggested Age: 9-14
Pieces: 775
Casual Build Time: 4 hours
Dimensions: The Scuttler – over 8″ x 9″ x 10″ / Vine Monster – over 1″ x 4″ x 4″
Brand: LEGO Batman Movie

As the DVD release of the LEGO Batman film is only a few weeks away, I thought it was a good time to post up a review of one of its most impressive tie-in sets. If you’ve seen the movie, you probably remember the Scuttler. This mecha joins the likes of the Batwing and Batmobile in Batman’s arsenal of vehicles, but stands out from the rest in that it seems to be intelligent, following Batman’s commands in a dog-like manner.

The Scuttler kit boasts extendable front legs, two cockpits, a net launcher and six stud shooters. It also comes with six minifigures – Batman, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Commissioner Gordon, the Joker and Poison Ivy. The assorted accessories that come with the set include batarangs, a jet pack, the Joker’s “bang” gun and Ivy’s vine monster.

Year of the Rooster

Suggested Age: 7+
Pieces: 161
Casual Build Time: 20 minutes
Brand: LEGO Creator

This was the last of the special sets that I managed to snag during my January trip to London. This one was released over a very limited time to celebrate Chinese New Year, and was only available in the UK to people who spent over a certain amount in the Leicester Square store. It’s now pretty hard to find, but there are some copies available on eBay if you desperately want one to add to your collection.

The set contains all of the pieces required to make the rooster and comes in a nice little presentation box. Included in the set is also a cardboard envelope, designed so that you can also give a gift of money along with the kit as per New Years tradition.

Here’s a better look at what came in the box:
