Way back in June of last year, I took a look at the Deep Sea Starter Set in order to decide if I wanted to buy one of LEGO City’s larger aquatic sets. This year, I decided to do the same with one of their more recent ranges. The Volcano brand appeals to me because I have a childhood obsession with this particular natural phenomenon. How could I turn down a set that came with its own tiny working volcano accessory!
The set comes with a small selection of different vehicles and figures, including at ATV and the previously mentioned volcano. It also includes a lava rock, four themed minifigures and a selection of accessories, including a metal detector, walkie talkie, camera and pick axe.
Here are some better photos of what came inside the box:
The set is very quick and easy to build, presenting no unforeseen challenges or issues. There aren’t even any stickers, making this a good first kit for any young master builder (particularly if they’re a volcano fan like myself). While there is nothing especially eye-grabbing or special about the finished product, it does offer a lot of scope for imaginative play due to the variety of items included. Here’s a better look at those items, one at a time.
The main item in this set is the ATV. This is a small and simple vehicle, but is a lot of fun to play with. It includes moving wheels, a clip to attach the the walkie talkie and a chain which fastens on top of the transparent lava rock so you can drag it along. The lava rock also splits in half to reveal crystals hidden within. The ATV is a fun little vehicle that easily fits one minifigure, making it a very nice toy for imaginative play.
The tiny volcano is my favourite item in this set. The cone can be packed with orange “lava” pieces and crystals, which launch a surprising distance when you tap the black switch on the side. This is just, simply, cool. Its a simple but really fun toy, which adds a level of threat to your minifigures in their scientific expedition.
And then there is the figures themselves. I was pleased to see that this kit came with an equal number of male and female characters – way to go LEGO! – but its the small details that attract me to these the most. One figure has a burn on his cheek, while another is sweating heavily. These nice little touches made me smile as they add personality to the little figures. The accessories that came with them are also appropriate for this kit and will certainly come in handy during play.
All in all, this is a great starter set as it provides a lot of different things to play with. It was rather inexpensive too, making it an excellent stocking filler or small gift. It definitely made me interested to look at more of the Volcano range in the future.
